D.C. is ideally located between the banks of two rivers and bordered by Virginia to the south and Maryland to the north and east. Following the elaborate city plan laid out by Pierre L'Enfant, Washington has grown considerably over the past 235 years. Contrary to its current look, in an earlier time, D.C. was a predominantly rural area with large tracts of land extending in all directions from the U.S. Capitol. Today, it is the seventh largest metropolitan area in the country.
