The story of The Goodhart Group started with just Sue and Marty in 1992.  The market was slowly recovering from the bust of 1989 and agents were leaving the business.  At the time, Sue and Marty owned The Wicker Shoppe, a wicker furniture store they had opened in Old Town in 1981.  They enjoyed the business and they loved bringing their daughters, Allison and Amanda with them to work when they were babies.  However, since the furniture business also took a hit in the real estate bust of 1989, they knew that they needed to do something else, prompting them to become licensed real estate agents.

At the time there were fewer teams in the business.  Homes in the neighborhoods of Del Ray and Old Town where they sold had few improvements and even central air conditioning was a rarity.  Marty and Sue started with Long and Foster in 1992 and decided to target the Del Ray area, where most houses selling only between $90,000 and $150,000.  Marty and Sue went door to door in the neighborhood dropping off various holiday gifts to promote the Goodhart name.  This resulted in their first listing and sale in March of 1993 and from there, their career was launched. 

In 1998, the pair decided to join McEnearney Associates.  It was – and still is – the top producing firm in Alexandria. From here, the focus was changed from a duo to a group, and The Goodhart Group emerged.  This allowed them to continue in real estate together while staying involved with the community and their children.  Marty was the head coach for the Bishop Ireton women’s basketball team.  In twenty years of real estate, they never missed one of their kids’ games, even if that meant traveling all over the country.  The Goodhart Group has grown to 7 members and now is the top producing team at the number one office in Alexandria (and Northern Virginia).  This history not only gives us a look into how The Goodhart Group started, it also demonstrates the success of a family centered business, and how committed The Goodhart Group is to constantly improving and providing service filled with dedication, passion and heart.
